How to remove a background without Photoshop (free)

Jul 18, 2026 · 1 min read

Photoshop can remove a background, but it's expensive, it has a steep learning curve, and it's overkill when all you want is a clean cutout. You don't need it. A modern AI background remover does the same job in your browser in a couple of seconds, for free — no software to install and nothing to learn.

Why skip Photoshop

The old way meant the pen tool, layer masks, and refine-edge — minutes of careful work per image, and a subscription to a program most people use for one feature. An AI segmentation model understands the subject automatically, so removing a background is now a single click rather than a manual tracing job. For logos, product shots, portraits, and social images, that's all you need.

How to do it in your browser

Open Kavij, drag in your photo, and the AI detects the subject and clears the background. Download the result as a transparent PNG, or drop in a new color, gradient, or photo behind your subject first. There's no sign-up, no watermark, and no per-image limit — and because it runs on our own server, your image is never sent to a third party.

When you still want manual control

Automatic removal handles the vast majority of images, but you're not locked out of fine-tuning. An eraser brush clears any leftover background, a restore brush paints detail back, and pen and shape selection let you correct a tricky edge by hand — the same control Photoshop gives you, without the price tag or the wait.

For most people, most of the time, removing a background without Photoshop is faster, free, and produces an equally clean result.
